At 8:32am Sunday May 18 1980, volcanologist David Johnston was here on Coldwater Ridge monitoring Mount St. Helens when it erupted. He announced the eruption to the world with these five immortal words, “Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it!”. About 15 seconds later a massive pyroclastic flow moving at 600mph engulfed the ridge. Johnston’s body and camp were never found. This spot is now called Johnston Ridge.
