Description
A rock’s trip out over Racetrack Playa begins during winter storms when alternate freezing and unfreezing breaks off the rock from the crumbling background hill and it tumbles down into the lake bed below. The storms form a small, icy lake at that end of the playa. Prevailing winds blows the rocks very, very slowly over the thin, slippery ice. Eventually the ice melts, water dries up and just the rock and its wake remain.
